June's monthly exclusive comes from M G Boulter. 'Fan Fiction' was recorded with Elbow's Dave Gerard and features some of the Clifftown band in Lizzy and Paul. You can stream and download M G's EP Fan Fiction here or on the club bandcamp page.
"In early 2018 I shuttled between Southend and West Ham on the train, walking the mile to Star Lane in Canning Town to record with my friend Dave Gerard. I would walk from the station down a busy street following the Jubilee Line, gargantuan Victorian buildings punched the skyline near Star Lane station, schools or children’s homes- I thought of Dr Badnardo a lot on those walks. I’d done some session work for Dave in the past and we had got talking in late 2017 about working on a project together. In a complex that smelt constantly of cookie dough, fresh pine and seemed to be made of endless corridors dotted with sound proofed doors (each with their own weird and wonderful beats emitting from them) we began work on what was to become the Fan Fiction EP. Once the tracks were picked and roughly charted it wasn’t long before I was skirting the streets of Hornsey trying to find a cafe where Elbow’s Alex Reeves was having his breakfast. I recall a funeral spilling out onto the pavement in the bright spring sunshine, Alex’s studio hidden behind a hidden driveway, green North London trees.
Back at Canning Town and regularly stocked up on toasted sandwiches from a mobile cafe on Cody Docks Lizzy and Paul added their talents to the recording with Dave playing a variety of vintage keyboards for texture. Beers, pizzas, spiked steel railings, trucks churning the road of the industrial estate endlessly, the atrium constantly busy with dance school attendees waiting for the next rehearsal. It was all fiction of course, the falling from the bridge, the cold evening air as she lifted the lock and walked outside, the cat killing the bird under the tree, but the sentiments and the smell of cookie dough could not be more real."

this album has been the soundtrack to my last five months. my favorite track varies from day to day and mood to mood, but moths in the gaslight is always near the top. there's something very lived in about the world that boden paints with this one, and the thread of yearning that trails throughout brings this open sort of tenderness to an otherwise burning world, which just feels endlessly, beautifully human.
